My name is Felix. I’m a Data Scientist and R Developer. I build tools and apps (mostly with the R ecosystem) to automate data analysis, share insights and improve decision making.
My R Journey
My employer is always surprised by how fast I develop data products. My secret? Knowing exactly where to look online for the R code I need. And having numerous pre-built R templates which I can customize with new code. I started off making these templates for fun but they have been a surprising game-changer for me.
I am passionate about R programming. But that wasn’t always the case. I was moderately interested when I was taught R during my courses in statistics for social sciences. R was mostly used to run statistical tests and visualize data with basic plots (ggplot2 was not yet wildly popular). My interest increased while experimenting with interactive graphics and maps. But I really got hooked once I discovered R Shiny, with which one can build Web applications with only a few lines of code.
Convinced about the increasing role played by data in society and the rise of open source softwares over proprietary statistical programs, I chose to follow my hunch. After graduation, I took a year off to combine two of my passions: travelling and coding with R. I lived across numerous cities in Asia and Latin America, and spent my days learning everything I could about R programming: from making advanced data wrangling and interactive graphics, to developing R packages and building fun R Shiny applications. I ended up creating a collection of R templates for various use cases.
Once home, I started working as a Data Scientist for an international financial organisation. I have gradually extended and tweaked my R templates, improving their durability and design over the years. Having transitioned into other data related roles, I now have a significant number covering most of the use cases I have encountered.
I will gradually be sharing these templates, and hope they speed up your development time with R as well.
